The other countries were great but aren't the same as Italy.

So thanks for following along on my crazy blog and we will see you all very soon.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Mestre
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-56096809742557620432012-04-02T13:03:00.001-07:002012-04-02T13:03:14.875-07:00Arriving Venice - 1-2 April 2012We arrived with success and Francesco picked us up from the train station. We are having a lovely time. Willy received his gift from Soissons France from my lovely friend Isabelle and her mum. He loves the turtle and the turtle has been named turtle in French. Sorry cant remember what it is but know that he will have a very happy soppy (due to Willy trying to eat him) life here in Italy.

We headed into Venice today with the family, well Francesco had to work (sorry). Val if you are reading this Will was wearing his present today and he loved it. It did help him pick up the women, or it might be that he is just so plain adorable that he can't be resisted. I have never seen a baby where so many people want to touch him, talk to him it is weird.

Venice is so busy today, I don't think I would like to be here in Summer or carinvale time.

Let me say that Venice is not set up for babies or wheelchairs.

That over there is where you can catch a gondola for 1 euro which just goes from one side to the other.

Only 3 or sleeps.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Mestre
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-22989050410759540532012-03-31T11:04:00.001-07:002012-03-31T11:04:47.714-07:00Our last day in VeronaMMM, I am not sure what to say. This feels like the end of the trip. Tomorrow we head off to be with friends (which will be awesome) but this is the end of our official trip. Three months together, 24 x 7, 7 days a week as Brett pointed out before we left and we made it. We have been to England, France and Italy. We have been in two places that haven't seen snow in 20 - 30 years (Lyon and Rome), studied for a month, made new friends and fallen in love with a country which we already really liked. We have eaten some amazing food, drunk some fantastic wines and well generally enjoyed ourselves. We have learnt that italian drivers really drive to their own rhythm and rules and they only seem to apply to them and no one else. Don't even try to attempt to drive way beyond the speed limit, park in the middle of the street or on the footpath, park other cars in, ride your scooter while talking on the phone and doubling someone and well generally do whatever you want.

According to me it has been fantastic, we have had the best holiday every and although the trip is shorter than we originally planned the three months have been awesome, fantastic. Would I say life changing, no but would I say that we now look at things differently. Yes. Are we glad we did this trip yes.

For us it went so quickly. At the beginning it didn't seem to go so quick but this last few weeks have flown by. How can we be heading to Venice already. I mean we just got here. Who knows what the rest of this year will bring but let me say the first three month have been worth it.

This will probably be the last post in Italy as I am not sure if my next place has wifi. So you will get a final update when we get back to australia.

We finished off our tourist card today. One of the places was closed and I think that Brett was secretly glad. We headed off to the roman theatre and museum.

After this we headed off to lunch, the first place we went to didnt serve us so we left and I found this place called "Romeo and Juliet". Now you would think it was a tourist trap but it wasn't. The food was fantastic and it was a great finish to Verona. After lunch we strolled and then sat in the Arena for a bit.

Lovey, lovely and well lovely.

Thanks everyone for following our holiday but we will see you when we are back in Australia.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Verona
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-70139645147628560812012-03-30T11:33:00.001-07:002012-03-30T11:33:31.918-07:00A castle, Juliet, and a towerWe played tourists today, oh hold on we are tourists. We bought a 2 day Verona card. More for the free public transport than anything else but well we have it so we used it to visit the touristy stuff.

First stop was Castelo Vecchio. We got to tour around the castle, look at lots of old paintings of jesus and mary. I am sorry but there are only so many of those that we can look at. However the views from the castle walls were great.

Marty got a ride on a stone horse. He so enjoyed it. However I did not like walking on the floor as it wasn't the original floor and you could tell. So I walked around the edges.

Now one of the reasons we came to Verona is the so called Juliet and Romeo debacle. So with the tickets we bought we got free entry into Juliet's house and onto the supposed balcony where that really famous scene happened.

So the guys made it out today to check out the bed of Juliet in her house. They were very impressed. Unfortunately for Brett and I the words "tourist trap" springs to mind. You will remember my early posts about Jane Austin and somewhere else I cant remember where they have claimed something cause it makes good tourist business. This may be one of those cases. At least we got something to laugh about.

Look me and the guys got to be on the balcony of Romeo and Juliet. It wasn't possible to get it by ourselves but look how romantic it is. Brett was down below serenading us.

Now to my very exciting news. I made it to the top of the tower. Finally. Let me say I was not a very happy camper but I got Brett to take photos so I have proof. So we get to the tower, it is part of our card so Brett heads up using the stairs. I start talking to the guide dud and there is a lift that will get you almost to the top for 1 euro. So I figure I can do that bit and see after that. So I get in and we move towards the top. It stops and I get and guess what there are more stairs to the top. Now so far this bloody height thing has beaten me. So I walked around the other side and there is a little window (great views) and a little seat. So I sat down and watched everyone going up. Watching them go up so casually and I thought I can do it. So when no one was around I got up the first flight of stairs which wasn't to bad but then it went around and curvy and I went come on just look straight ahead and keep walking. I made it to the top but then there was a door. I had to let go of the railing to open the door. This door was nearly the end of my triumph. I finally was able to let go of the railing and push at the door. I eventually got out of the door and made it up the last few stairs. There was plenty of room at the top without having to be near the edge but I sat down for a bit to get a control of myself. Brett was very happy to see me. So I made myself do little things as well as being up there. Like take photos or move away from the railing in the middle and move to one side so he could take photos. It was very hard but I won. The elevator helped as it took me most of the way and my mind didn't have time to think about it too much. So yeh to me.

Don't I look so comfortable leaning into the wall.

Here is me at the bottom of the tower with a Yeh I made it jump.

After here we did two of the churches that were on the list. They were nice but I am over Jesus (sorry Jesus).

A great tourist day and and we have another one planned tomorrow where we will finish off the things we want to see and then on Sunday it is off to visit our friends Fiona and Francesco for 4 days and then it is time to head on home time.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Verona
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-47188356005029405292012-03-30T08:18:00.001-07:002012-03-30T08:18:58.279-07:00where for art thou my sweet julietInteresting day. We started off with visit to the local bank in Como to discuss with them how their machine ate our money. We had used the card yesterday but half way through the transaction it cancelled and gave us our card back. However when we check the bank statement that night it said that we had taken the money. So we had to go talk to them.

They were really nice and are looking into the problem at the moment and hopefully it will be resolved shortly.

The trip to Verona was uneventful. The trains are always easy to catch etc so we got here with ease. Even the bus wasnt that hard to get. We did have to ask someone and we found out we were standing at the right bus stop but going the wrong way. So we are just outside the city centre and the hotel seems really nice. The room is good but the internet is not functioning so not sure when you will get this. Probably when we get home.

We went into town just to have a look around. We bought a 2 day tourist card which gives us bus travel and entry into most of the places we want to see. So tomorrow we start being tourists. Will let you know how it goes.

M

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Verona
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-6413585807916162472012-03-28T12:45:00.001-07:002012-03-28T12:47:02.377-07:00Tweedle dee and Tweedle dumbWe will go backwards today. The title is implying that we are getting bigger by the day. It has slowly (or not so slowly happening) since we left. The last few nights we have been having salads with very little carbs and no meat at all.
So tonight being our last night we thought we would have salad for lunch instead of tea and have tea out. Why is my stomach controlling everything. we had 3 courses tonight. I could have just had the 'here dried meat and rocket salad' yes that is what they called it. Second course was pasta and then last course was pork chop in curry sauce. Each of them was really lovely but it was way to much. I don't feel very well at the moment.
When will my brain learn not to listen to stomach when it says 3 courses are a great idea.
We went for a ride on the boat today on the lake. It doest go everywhere at this time of year but enough places for us to see how lovely this place is. Poor George for having to live here. I got a hair cut, bought some makeup while Brett read comics and we had pizza by the lake and home for a nap. He does't actually live in Como but one of the other places. I have it written down so if we ever want to visit him we can.

Como is bigger than I expected but still beautiful.

The colours around today are a bit muted for some reason. There aren't bright spring colours but more muted until you look at the lake.

We are here for 3 nights and I think we will find plenty to do. Our hotel is lovely and we always love that the staff continue to talk in italian to us after we have spoken in our awesome Italian.

They have a funicular here and we went up it today. Awesome, the views are splendid and if you walk up and around the hill some more you can see another part of the lake. The temperature is warming up and the days are getting longer. It is now I wish we were staying longer. Oh well.

Here is the view from the first look out. It is sad each time we leave, there have only been a few places that we haven't really cared if we left or not unfortunately Milan is not one of those. I arrived here thinking oh well, we have to fill in 4 days somewhere, to this is a place I want to come back to.

We went into the city today to visit the castello (*castle). The city was closed as there was some sort of fun run, marathon thingy going on. Which is great when you want to walk around the streets.

Normally this fountain is very active with water but it must of been having a break when we turned up. It was another lovely day with the sun shining and us walking around in the public gardens, watching all the runners.

Here is Brett checking out the duck pond.

We found this spot in the duck pond that all the turtles come to sun themselves. There were about 10 of them either approaching by water or on the land itself. It was sort of funny watching them.

Today was my visit to I promessi spossi, an italian modern opera based on a book they have been talking about in classes back home for some time. So today we went and saw the opera version and it was a great spectacular and we both really enjoyed it. Not so sure about the old guy beside me who kept going to sleep. It would have been nice if he wasn't going to use his binoculars to lend them to me but oh well.

So thanks Milan for showing us a wonderful time. It is such a wonderful time to be here when the weather and plants are changing. They have remained dormant all winter and are now springing into spring (hee hee). We don't see this so much in Brisbane but to watch it here well like I said glorious.

We finished off our Big Red Bus tour today and well I had to take some touristy snaps for you. We eventually got off near the restaurant we wanted and also a Decathalon store. We went into the store and ended up buying a running pack. It is small but it straps on so that you can carry stuff with you.

Brett was looking at heart rate monitors for when we return to Brisbane. I already feel sporty from my purchase.

Lunch was awesome, we had mains and dessert this time. We had an awesome chat to the owner and he told us about where he was born and it looks like somewhere we will visit next time. This time at the restaurant we were treated like a local, handshakes on arrival, little nibbles before the main meal etc. It was so nice.

When we were in Florence they had a modern opera of "i promessi spossi" and I didn't get to see it, I think it had something to do with Brett. Much to my delight it is in Milan this weekend so we are off to watch it on Sunday. I can't wait.

Back on the red bus and travel around the city some more. We eventually arrived home and had some wine and watched tv and read and now it is time to go to bed.

The weather is awesome.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Milan
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-26414339022933089232012-03-22T12:51:00.001-07:002012-03-22T12:51:37.184-07:00First impressions are importantI think first impressions are important. Not always but in this case yes. I really think the weather, the people and the food you first have when you arrive shapes how you feel about the city. With this in mind we love Milan.

We arrived by train to beautiful weather. The first part of the train station when you arrive is sort of ugly but not. However when you walk out into the other area it is a lovely train station. We are staying in dodgy ville area, it got good reviews and is very very close to the train station. The hotel itself from the outside doesn't look great but the room is fine, we have internet and the bed seems semi comfortable. We arrived well and truly before lunch so we dropped our bags off and headed to the centre of the city. I had researched and found another place to eat so off to the metro to get there. This is always entertaining trying to work out a new metro system. Eventually we bought tickets, found the right subway and we were on our way.

I am now a strong believer in reviews - reviews for hotels, restaurants everything. They are so important. Especially when you want to eat well and sleep well. Our hotel is nothing special but the room is spacious and clean and and the place we chose for lunch was fantastic.

We really like it so much so that we are going back again tomorrow.
We had a sparkling pinot grigio and it was one of the nicest white wines I have had this trip. I ordered gnocchi which was lovely but a bit filling. Brett had seafood risotto which was really nice. We had a bit of a funny moment with the waiter. He was asked us if we were from Ireland and we said no australia and he pointed out to us that we were both wearing green. See girls it even happens over here. I hadn't even really noticed we were were the same coloured shirts. Will pay better attention next time.

I had Brett laughing at me for a bit at lunch. Most of you know what a soopy person I am. I love romantic movies and cry at some ads. So we are sitting there enjoying ourselves and an old lady turned up and got a table and said she was waiting for someone. She ordered a couple of wines and sat there waiting. I think she waited for a good 10 - 15 minutes. I had this image of she was waiting for her dead husband and no one would actually show up, so I was getting upset she looked so lonely. Eventually some other ladies turned up and I assume they were her daughters. Not long after her granddaughter turned up with some flowers for her. I was so happy for her I had tears in my eyes. So Brett has been giving me heaps about this for the afternoon.

We got two little glasses of lemon cello afterwards and they were really really nice. When we went to pay it seemed to little so we said something and ended up having a wonderful conversation with the owner (I assume). He said the lemon cello was on the house, asked us where we were from and then when he found out we were from Australia began to tell us his children who both have degrees in something were living in melbourne making pizzas and really loved australia.

We promised we would be back tomorrow for another great meal. I cant wait. We wandered the streets with all the other italians and tourists walking down streets full of shops, cafes, people selling books, trying to get money out of you. In a little space was this asian man sitting there quietly making these animals out of vegetables. They were so amazing, I asked to take a photo and gave him some money. They were so cool.

Marty got out to look at the church which with the blue sky behind it was amazing and a brilliant white. We went and and wandered around. Here is one of the cardinals. That is actually him. He has been embalmed and dressed so that people can pray to him. To me it is creepy but to millions to catholics it makes sense.

Once outside the church brett as asked by this guy to take a photo. It was so funny cause he took like 10 photos. Every time Brett would take a photo the guy would ask for another one from a different angle. Brett was thinking at this point that it was a scam and was trying to work out what it was but I think he just wanted his photo taken.

Walking down the street we saw this police man stop the traffic and a woman just standing in the middle of the road and we couldn't work out why. Then we noticed the dog was doing a poop in the middle of the road. She had to run of the road and get a bag and then run back and pick up the poop, it was so funny.

It was such a lovely first day in Milan and can't wait to see what happens tomorrow.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Milan
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-17511663499779476112012-03-21T23:22:00.001-07:002012-03-21T23:22:09.296-07:00The red centreWe visited Bologna today. We wanted to stay there originally but it was too expensive. So we stayed in Modena which has been lovely and we have had two awesome meals here but when you visit Bologna it just has a different feel.

Bologna is a university town so it is always busy and has a lot on. Today when we arrived they were having a protest about the maffia. They love their protests over here.

We had no plans today but to arrive and wander around the city oh and eat something of course. The weather was perfect.

I was reading online that there is 48km approximately of portoco's (undercover walk ways) which is really nice to walk around and would be great in bad weather.

They make so much sense and maybe when we come back here we will walk all 48km of them.

Bologna is also known for its food so here is a shot for you Julie.

On the way to lunch Marty and I stopped in at the Spanish holiday stand and got our photo taken.

Lunch was at Trattoria da Pietro and was lovey as always. I thought you might have liked our waitress Jules.

After lunch we headed back to Modena which is about 20mins away by train. On the way home we bought a new bag to put our clothes in because on the way we have ended up with 2 rain coats from england, 2 new jackets florence, 1 jumper for me, 1 long coat for brett. I am minus my jeans as they ended up with holes in then. Man it is hard to get good quality these days. Plus all the books from school etc, dvds and a game. It was getting to hard to carry so we now have another bag.

The rest of the afternoon was spent researching and booking accommodation for the rest of our trip. It is all done now. Dinner was in our room again with a bottle of wine and pizza, nice way to finish here.

So till tomorrow stay safe.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Bologna
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-27912769266064282892012-03-20T13:50:00.001-07:002012-03-20T13:50:11.852-07:00A little old man time
Brett found out there are food markets that are on every day except Sundays so we went out to check them out. We even left our hotel by 9am which is unheard of for us. Why is it that when you don't have an apartment you find great food markets. They were great and wish we had somewhere to cook or even reheat some of this great food.

Now we have noticed an interesting phenomena happening all over Italy but you notice it more in the small towns. This was taken at mid morning today as we sat in the Piazza Grande watching the world go by. Notice there are a couple of groups of older men standing around. There were a few other groups around the piazza (not in this photo). We think they come there everyday to talk about the soccer and politics and well not sure what else. It is interesting watching them. Do they plan to meet everyday or does it just happen? Why are they in their separate groups and what creates these groups? What are their wives doing while they are here, I dare say getting lunch ready, looking after the house, the grandchildren etc.

It is nice to see them all hang out together and just chat, just wish I could hear what they are talking about.

Lunch was at Ristorante Omar which is a place Brett found recommended on lonely Planet. We turned up to early and they were only just making the pasta so we headed out and came back half an hour later. I can honestly say this is the BEST pasta we have had in our lives. This includes Locatelli. It was light and cooked to perfection, the sauces that went with them were perfect. They have this interesting concept were they bring you a bottle of wine and you only pay for what you have drunk (never a good thing for us). Two plates of pasta and a couple of glasses of wine later it was 25 euro. So cheap especially considering the quality. The woman in the photo is one of the owners and was still making pasta when we left and I asked if we could take a photo. She learnt from her mother who learnt from her mother etc. It was interesting cause she was saying she didn't want to learn but her mother made her.

Back to the hotel for an afternoon nap but we were delayed getting home by the enoteca that was open near us, so we thought we would drop in and have a look and another glass of red wine later we left. This place is great and has a wide variety of wines to choose from. I think we may have to go back, if we get time.

Dinner was pizza and wine in our room checking out where we are going next. We are thinking Milan, Lake Como and Verona then on to Venice to stay with our friends Fiona, Francesco and William.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Modena
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-5129402656970643992012-03-20T13:31:00.001-07:002012-03-20T13:31:54.790-07:00Modena - 19 March 2012We left Tuscany a little sad and a little happy that we would be back in the city again. It was such a fab time and we will miss the apartment, the quite and the views from our little paradise. I think Brett will be happy to hand back the car

The drive back into town went off without a hitch which is always great and we got the car back in one piece. Yeh Brett for driving us so safety. We have left behind grover (bretts purple winter jacket) some gloves, and my slippers which will now forever be part of Tuscany (they are buried in the bush somewhere).

The trip to Modena was uneventful and we got to our hotel by 1pm.

The lovely woman on reception gave us a great recommendation for lunch "ritorante danilo" so we dropped off our bags and headed out to lunch. She was right the food and wine was fantastic. Modena is known for its lambrusca wine and it was great and I am sure we will try some more.

Back to the hotel for some internet surfing and catching up on everything that has been happening while we have been out of contact.

So all emails checked, bills paid and well just general surfing. So nice to be in contact again. We did find out that Little Miss Audry decided to do a day trip of her own over the last few days and headed off to the neighbours for some fun staffy time. Lucky she has been found and is now tied up to remind her she is naughty.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Modena
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-60514042305748663902012-03-19T09:15:00.001-07:002012-03-19T09:15:23.323-07:00Under the Tuscan Sun - 17 March 2012Again we awoke to fog, but knowing it clears about 10 or so we planned one more trip into Tuscany. Guess where? You guessed it Cortona.

Ok on this trip I have picked places I would live if I won lotto and could travel a lot. So in England it was either Bath or Padstow ( I am learning towards Padstow for Audry's sake), in France it was definately no questions asked Bordeaux. Now Italy, up until now I really didnt have anywhere except Florence. I would live in Florence in a shot above all other places. Today was where god spoke to me (ok maybe not but I am trying to convince Brett so bear with me on this whole god talking to me thing) and said I should live some of the year in Florence and the rest of the time in Cortona. For those of you that have seen 'Under the Tuscan Sun" this is the town where it is filmed. This small town is on a hill and is beautiful. Big enough to have a enough to do and enough places to walk and visit and eat and drink and the views are some of the best I have seen.

We got there in time to park and go up to sets of escalators, yes this civilised country uses outdoor escalators to get you from the car park half way down the hill up to the main part of town. I know it is ingenious isnt it.

I have been using a travel guide to find places to eat and today was no exception. We ate at Ristorante Preludio and the food was exsquisite. I had a cheese soufflé for entree with a apple sauce and for main roasted duck breast in an anise sauce with a potato flan. To finish i had a chocolate soufflé.

After lunch we strolled around the town, which wasn't easy as most of the best places are up and up. We walked to the top of the hill where there is an old fortress and took in the views. Walked back down and by this time I had jelly legs from all the walking up and all the walking down. Which was so worth it. Anna start checking out places to buy or rent in this place.

Marty get out of the mouth of that Dragon you don't know what he has been eating.

By the time we left it was around 3.30 which is late for us as normally we would eat lunch and leave but this town needed to be explored.

We took a different way home, thanks again to my sign reading. We went through some lovely countryside and some old abandoned houses (wish I had heaps of money) and eventually found the freeway again.

Eventually we arrived home at about 5.30. All of our neighbours are here and again are having dinner without us. So rude. Oh well we watched a movie, sitting in front of the roaring fire and eventually had tea. Today is our second last night here. Tomorrow is Sunday and our last day here in Tuscany. Time to try and pack everything and get ready to leave.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Under the Tuscan Sun
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-76926386790007252532012-03-19T09:14:00.001-07:002012-03-19T09:14:35.225-07:00Where did Tuscany go? 16 March 2012When we awoke today there was nothing to see, no blue sky, no rolling hills nothing. The fog has decided to arrive and this morning as we looked out our windows there was nothing to see. It eventually cleared off to become such a lovely day. So much so we played where's wally (monique)? See if you can see me.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Somewhere in Tuscany
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-37165795370402776412012-03-19T09:13:00.001-07:002012-03-19T09:13:48.761-07:00Shopping, finding lunch and home - 15 March 2012Today we decided that we would drive around have a look at some of the local things, do our shopping and have lunch at a little place that was recommended in a town called Buonconvento.

It didnt take us very long to have a look at the local things which meant that we were finished way before lunch so we decided to head to Asciano to do our shopping. Now we only have like four nights left in this amazing place but we ended up buying five bottles of wine, some beer and prosecco and that was just the alcohol. So we had to bring it all home first so that the white wine was ready for us that afternoon after lunch. So home we went. Now this is where I really should have listened to Brett. The I am so confident I can get us to Buonconvento without a map attitude took over. We had received a recommendation from someone over the last few days plus it was in one of the books that there is a little restaurant called "marios" in Buonconvento. Now we had been through this place several times so I was so confident that I could get us back there for lunch without the map. In hindsight (always a wonderful thing) this was not such a great idea. I got the first part right but instead of going into the town and then out the otherside, I skipped the town and we ended up going in the rather large circle back towards Asciano. By this stage I knew we were heading the wrong way and had to say something.

However we kept going to Asciaano and we thought we could just have lunch somewhere else. Lucky there was a sign at the roundabout just before going into town and we followed it to Buonconvento. A couple of times I still wasn't 100% that we were going the right way but the views and scenery from the road were amazing so we kept driving. It was the right road and it took us a little longer than I had planned to get us to lunch but it was so worth it.

This was definitely where the locals ate. There is no menu and when he told us the menu we were a little overwhelmed and zeroed in on what we understood which was wild boar stew. It was fantastic. When we heard the menu read out to everyone else you hear that there is 3 or 4 types of pasta you can have with several different sauces for the first course, and then there is the second course. It really is not that complicated but when he was telling us it seemed harder.

In these little places if you want a glass of house wine they bring you the whole bottle and you pay for what you drink. I had one glass and it cost 1 euro, yep you read right 1 euro. Brett didn't have any wine as he was driving. We weren't going to have dessert but well I was silly enough to ask and then well before you know it you have ordered something and are eating dessert.

The trip home was along the same road we came and the weather was just perfect for driving slowly and just looking.

Now to wine time, I had planned that we would have apertivo (this is where you have a drink and snack after work and before dinner). It was too early for this so we opened the white wine, grabbed our comics headed down to the pool area and laid around in the sun drinking and reading. An hour or so later it was time for aperitivo (snacks and drinks). At this point we decided that it wouldn't be a good idea to open another two bottles of wine (1 for aperitivo and then 1 for dinner) so we combined and only opened the red. The prosecco will have to wait for another day.

Thursday night is il giovane montiblanco (the young montiblanco) so we stayed up till 9:30 to watch him. I look forward to the day where I can understand all of it.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Somewhere in Tuscany
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-79819749875178943892012-03-19T09:11:00.001-07:002012-03-19T09:11:35.437-07:00Monday- Wednesday 12 - 14 March 2012The days here are starting to get warmer. Apparently spring is just around the corner and the change in weather has been awesome for us. Everyday is sunny wtih endless blue skies, over rolling green/white/brown hills. How quickly can we return.

Monday we stayed at home, went shopping for more wine and food and returned home to eat and drink and read. It is interesting because as we get closer to coming home we both think more of home and less of here. We are approaching that time where you are crossing over into the space of just before. Just before you leave, just before you return home and to your old life. Where you are here but also there. I am looking forward to seeing Audry and all my friends and family but I wish it wasnt so far away otherwise we might come back for a month or so. Might have to come back next year.

Tuesday
Tuesday we went off to Siena for a few hours. We found Siena ok and after one wrong turn we some how found a really good car park (by accident might I say). Parked and wandered around town. It is such a lovely place and it was nice to be back. We found somewhere to eat but it wasn't open till 12 so we headed to find the wine enoteca that has a lot of wines. It wasn't open till 12 either so well back to wandering the streets. I found an irish pub that had wifi but you guessed it, it didnt open till 12 either. So we dumped the restaurant went to the wine bar and had a taste of two wines and had some meats and cheeses for lunch. We stopped off at the irish bar so I could at least post the blogs. So at least they are up to date. I didn't have time to check out the new release of the ipad 3. Will have to wait now until we are in Modena. We will be staying there for a few days after here and then we head up to Lake Como.

We found the car again, always a bonus and headed home. We somehow found our way out of the main part of city, back onto the road home. We were home in time for some more sitting in the sun and relaxing. It is so funny as I actully have a pair of shorts with me by luck. When we arrived in London many months ago I was looking for something in my bag and right at the back I found my shorts that I thought that I had lost. I dont know why they were in the bag but they are now coming in handy. I can sit on the steps in the sun. However I have realised that I will be brown only on one side. Which will look funny I am sure but it is just nice to be warm again. I have never been so cold. Not even when we go skiing have I been that cold. At least with skiing you know it is for a short time and normally your accomoodation is warm as well. However here they like to save power and not use heaters etc that much so everywhere is cold. So might I suggest to anyone thinking of travelling to europe in winter either don't or make sure you have heaps of warm clothes. I thought I had enough but no I ended up buying a jumper which now I have to bring home but it was so worth it.

Wednesday
I have finally found the rolling green hills of Tuscany that I have been looking for. I am sitting on the bed looking out the arched windows onto the hills and padocks of Tuscany with the background talk of the neigbhours and gardening activities. They are here for the day to work in the garden getting it ready for spring and summer. The hills are green, brown, dark brown and white. I am going to try and get some more photo before we leave but they never seem to do the landscape justice.

The views from the bedroom window and house.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Somewhere in Tuscany
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-82946523157445082532012-03-13T05:21:00.005-07:002012-03-13T05:21:54.803-07:00Perugia - 11 March 2012We have stayed home for the last couple of days and it has been awesome, the weather has been fantastic. It is a little windy here in Tuscany but when the sunshines it is an amazing place.

Today we decided to head on up to Perugia, this was my original choice for doing a month's study so we thought we would head and have look. It was the biggest town we have driven to or around so it was a bit exciting and stressful. The town is beautiful but I am so glad that I picked Florence.

Although it is Sunday and most things are closed we thought we would drive anyway. It gets us out of the house and the traffic isnt so bad.

We eventually made it onto the autostrada after a couple of wrong turns and one getting cranky episode in the car but you just have to follow the green signs when you can find them.

I think it was about 1hr to get there with the little detours and well we parked as far away as possible. We found the first park but as we werent sure as to where we were so we took it and started walking.

We soon discovered that they have these little mini monorail carriages that take you to the top, so we found the stop closest to us and hopped on and it was great. You arrive to the top and the have to go up a few escalators to go further to the top. Wow the views to the mountains are amazing. You can see the snow on some of them.

We strolled around the city and have a few photos. Brett is really starting to look like an Italian. He is the trendy one in the leather jacket and sunnies.

Like most of our places we find somewhere nice to eat for lunch and well have lunch. Today was no exception. Thanks to the ipad and the tuscany travel book (thanks Brad) we found this great place called 'Il Cantinone'. The food was fantastic and so was the wine. For 2 plates of pasta (mine was better this time, normally it is Brett who picks the best one) one gnochhi and the other ravaoli, two desserts (delicious) and 1/2 litre of wine and a coffee it came to the lowly price of $32 euro. We thought that was good.

After rolling out of there we strolled back to the car. Even the churches close between 12- 3pm so it was time to go home. The trip home was a lot quicker as it was autostrada all the way and then we got off at the right place. Wound our way through the hills to Asciano and they were still having their markets so we stopped in. Marty as you can see made a brief appearance but the other two were hiding.

Tonight Brett is making me chicken stew with polenta.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Somewhere in between Tuscany and Umbria
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-24241787969825284042012-03-13T05:21:00.003-07:002012-03-13T05:21:21.694-07:00George negus - tell us what you think - 10 March 2012Today I finished my italian comic and was browsing C's bookshelf and came across a book written by George negus in 1999/2000 about Italy, love, politics and soccer. It was awesome and I spent the whole day reading it and working on my workers suntanned arms. I have now finished said book and can return to italian comics tomorrow. It was worth the read and explains how Italy to the outsider can look but from the inside it is completely different.

All of our neighbors turned up today but there was no conversation happening between us. There was a buon giorno but that was it. Oh well I will continue to talk just to Brett and Marty, hooter and kiwi. I mean no invite to drinks or anything. Lucky as I have nothing to wear. My jeans are starting to look worse for wear and so are the tops.

I cooked polenta with italian sausages and fresh mozzarella yummy. Sorry no photos there wasn't time as it was so yummy we ate it really quickly.

Has anyone else noticed that the time has gone very fast and in about three weeks we will be home and our favourite wine instead of costing us 13€ will cost $40. instead of eating bread and pasta every day it will be salads and no wine. That is enough to make a grown couple cry.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Somewhere in Tuscany
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-47995258634452559182012-03-13T05:21:00.001-07:002012-03-13T05:21:11.195-07:00Shopping is all - 9 March 2012Nothing to report today apart from a trip fare la spesa (shopping). It is about a half hour round trip to get to shopping and back. It isnt like you can pop down to the shop if you need something. So a few bottles of wine and other necessities later it was back home to sit on the balcony sunning myself. I am however noticing that I am getting workers suntan on my arms. I have a short sleeve shirt and I sit outside in the sun for an hour or so and well I think I have to find a singlet.

I bought a few italian movies and we have been working our way through them. One day I will be able to watch them without italian subtitles, one day.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Somewhere in Tuscany
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-28447110126770256582012-03-13T05:15:00.003-07:002012-03-13T05:15:54.711-07:00Happy Woman's day - 8th March 2012Apparently, thanks to my friend Fiona I know today is International Women's Day. There should of been a whole heap of people handing out wattle. I know wattle right. I thought this plant/flower was only in Australia but no it is everywhere. Unfortunately it wasn't anywhere we were today.

It was a blue sky, sun shining kinda day so we headed off to Greve in Chianti. So onto the freeway, some map reading and I must say I am getting better at this. I think we took the longest way possible but the scenery was beautiful. We had a few u turns and down the wrong way but made it there in time to stroll the streets, check out the famous meat store and buy some famous steak and pork products. We are having the steak for tea and the salami /meats tomorrow with cheese and bread.

Lunch was in a little ristorante and we had papadelle con wild boar sauce. Yummy.

I was sitting on the steps at the house with the sun shining and it was so lovely, I was reading one of my italian books and just enjoying the sun. It is so nice to sit there and just enjoy it. So you know sitting in the sun makes you sleepy so off for an afternoon nap.

I think tomorrow we will have a day at home and I am hoping that the sun shines for us tomorrow so we can sit around and just enjoy it. I know it is hard this realxing and just sitting around but well someone has to do it. I am writing this as Brett starts to cook our bisteca florentine and roast veggies.

I think we want a new oven when we get home, this whole fan forced thing is awesome, if anyone has any suggestions for a great stove/oven would love to hear about it when I get home.

Here is the view up to our house. Julie the kitchen was waiting for you and let me say you would have loved it here. Not that the rest of you would't mind it either.

Questo tempo qui a Tuscany e bellisima. La casa é perfetto. Ogni giorno proviamo guidare la macchina. Siamo andati a Montepulciano, Monticiano, Greve in Chianti e altra cittadini.

Ogni giorno proviamo leggere qualcosa in italiano and guardare la tv. Ci manche le classe italiano ma i nostri amici ritornano casa e il tempo ha cambiato.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Somewhere in Tuscany
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-79855169697217175762012-03-13T05:15:00.001-07:002012-03-13T05:15:26.046-07:00Will the real Brunello please stand up - 7 March 2012
On Monday we went for a drive to Montepulciano, which we thought was the home of the famous Brunello wines, but alas we were mistaken. While the town was lovely it was not the place we were looking for. We found out after doing some reading that the town we really wanted was Monticiano. This is also another lovely little town but the home of the famous Brunello wines.

We arrived with the sun shining and found the fortress and did a wine tasting, this is where the touristy party kicked in and we paid 24 euro for our wine tasting. We tried 4 wines and only a tasting. They werent bad but we are drinking wines at the moment for 13 euro's a bottle that taste better.

So we left our tourist trap and strolled around the town. We stopped into afew of the enoteca's and looking around I am not sure how they are making any money. They are all selling / tasting most of the same wines but the tasting is cheaper than what we paid.

We stopped in at one and found out the lady serving us was from England and ended up having a conversation about the economy and how it is going. For those of you that dont know, italy and probably alot of Europe is f..k..d. Within the next year there will be no money no nothing. There are shops closing down every day and then people lose their jobs. There are factories that have been going for 20 - 30 years that are shutting down and then all the people that they have hired are out of work. Apparently there is a high suicide rate at the moment with all the stress of all of this. Now this is the opinion of one person but well when you watch the news, read the papers they are sort of saying the same thing. It is like a rolling stone, where will it stop.

It was in interesting discussion but we didnt end up buying anything and headed off for more looking etc. We did buy 3 wines to have over the next few days. We headed off home for lunch as we had spent a bit already. On the way home I thought we werent going to make it. Brett was driving thank god as this crazy lady was going way to fast and on the wrong side of the road. It was one of the moments where if we had left a few minutes earlier or Brett had been going faster I would not be writing this I reckon someone would be coming over to get the bodies. Brett put the brakes on and at the last minute she went back to her side, it scared the b..jesus out of us. Crazy lady and I thought we would be the ones to have the problem with the wrong side of the road. With our close call behind us we got home and had a lovely lunch, just in time to watch the jets come past the house really low and really fast. We must be in the fly zone as this is the second day we have seen it. It comes past about 3pm. This is the second day. Man was it load, but it was sort of fun. We imagined that it was Mick flying by to say hi, bit annoyed he didn't stop in to say hi.

We had one of our Italian neighbours out and about today and well I was such an idiot, I couldnt remember how to speak and I am sure he thought i was stupid english girl. Oh well I rushed inside so I wouldn't have to talk to anyone. Oh well so much for my month of italian lessons. Back to square one.

Hope all is well in Brissy and miss you all.

Love Monique, Brett, Marty, Kiwi and Hooter

Location:Somewhere in Tuscany
Mon & Bretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00609574507809465587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-685339770707369346.post-84951883905518367992012-03-13T05:14:00.001-07:002012-03-13T05:14:43.088-07:00Nothing to report 6 March 2012
Today was a relax day at home.
